Motivational Interviewing (M.I.) is a counselling approach originally developed for dealing with substance misuse issues in Health contexts, usually in one to one settings and over longer periods of up to an hour in length. It is now being used with great success in a wide variety of health fields such as smoking cessation, cardiac acre, diabetes, exercise and nutrition.
This training is a taster for the approach, familiarising trainees with central concepts such as
- Change as a process
- The stages of change model
- Resistance as a two way process
- Avoiding advice giving
- Increasing compliance by avoiding coercion
- Person centred practice
The training also teaches core skills of Motivational Interviewing including
- Foundations skills of reflective listening
- Hearing Change Talk
- Rolling with resistance
To illustrate the power of the techniques and the spirit, trainees will be asked to work with their own material with regard to changes they are attempting to make in their own behaviour.
