Health Professionals Training Portfolio
Health Behaviour Change
ignition training in health behaviour change is based in the well-supported approach of Motivational Interviewing, developed originally in the field of substance misuse but now applied to many health behaviour change situations, such as smoking, diabetes, obesity, exercise, cardiac care and so on. Details of our experience in MI based approaches can be found here.
  • Level 1: Brief Introduction to Motivational Interviewing (1 day)
Evidence suggests that the primary effect of brief interventions is motivational. This event offers an introduction to effective and patient-centred strategies to facilitate positive change and enhance compliance with health interventions, introducing core skills and concepts.

Flexible delivery: The above course is available in modular format of four two hour sessions.
  • Level 1: Motivational Interactions
Engaging People in Health Behaviour Change (2 days)
This broad multidisciplinary course is suitable for all health-care professionals who need to encourage behaviour change in patients or clients specifically within a framework of time-limited health consultations. Where the motivational potential of each brief interaction must be maximised, the course provides a wide perspective across the full Cycle of Change, from initial engagement and consideration of health issues, to deciding actions and maintaining change, to successfully altered behaviour or coping with lapse.
  • Level 2: Foundations of Motivational Interviewing (2 days)
Aimed at health professionals whose job role allows for longer or more regular consultations, this course emphasises the EARLY stages of the Cycle of Change when patients in the consultation process may not see a health problem or may not be ready or motivated to take decisions. The training provides carefully structured strategies and clear skills for more in-depth motivational work with patients at the stages of Pre Contemplation, Contemplation and Action when initial motivation for change is being explored and developed, to facilitate patients to engage in the process of decision making and health related change.

Flexible delivery: The above two courses are available in modular half day format; this format requires five half days to ensure sufficient time for review of material.
  • Level 3: Improving Motivational Interviewing (1 day, Min. 10, max 16, £125.00 per person)
This course is ONLY for health professionals who have experience of and training in Motivational Interviewing. The style and skills are explored in more depth, case studies around current practice are examined and more advanced techniques are introduced. A premium is placed on providing space for participants to explore difficulties they may have encountered when facilitating change with clients, with the aim of resolving these issues, improving practice and enhancing skills already held.

On-going External Supervision Support

A major issue with M.I. training is the ‘drift’ of trainees away from effective M.I. practice once training has concluded. ignition offers individually tailored external supervision support packages in the workplace to ensure that professional skills remain at their optimum following training. Please contact us to discuss what may be most effective for your setting.
