Level 2, 3 : Foundations of Group work (1,2,3,4,5 days. Min 10, Max 20, £110.00 per person per day)
What are ‘Group work skills’?
Group work is used in many arenas from Mental Health and psychotherapy through criminal justice to personal development, and varies in delivery from entirely verbal to physical and theatrical. None the less there are certain competencies and levels of knowledge which should be achieved by anyone undertaking group work, whatever their context. Within the UK criminal justice system optimum delivery of even tightly controlled cognitive-behavioural programmes based on Effective Practice guidelines1 could be enhanced if workers have an awareness and skills base which extends beyond simply being able to deliver ‘what is in the manual’.

Who is it suitable for?
Experienced group workers familiar with concepts of group dynamics and group process, aware of differing models of group work and with a good level of group-based interpersonal competencies and understanding of group motivational issues may wish to bypass the Foundation course and proceed directly to our more specialised training in group work techniques.

For workers who do not have such a level of knowledge or experience, ignition Foundations of Group Work Skills is suitable for any worker running or wishing to run groups on subjects as diverse as personal development, substance misuse or offending behaviour and which have an experiential or active element. The training is modular depending on the needs of the trainee group. Course contents can include
  • Models of group work
  • Core concepts of experiential learning
  • Learning styles
  • Group process issues
  • Co working skills
  • Person centred approach and core conditions
  • Using the group as a resource
  • Planning group sessions
  • Participative methods
  • Using syndicates

The training offers staff a chance to equip themselves with a comprehensive foundation understanding of the concepts behind the term ‘group work’, and an opportunity to develop the core skills which are most likely to facilitate an engaging and interesting experience for group members, thus maximising the likelihood of positive outcomes.
