Level 2: Advanced Motivational Interactions (2 days, Min 10, Max 12, £250.00 per person)
Using the techniques taught at the Foundation level of Motivational Interactions, motivational work with offenders should now be occurring ‘outside of the box’ of formalised interviews or programme settings and as a part of everyday interactions between staff and offenders.

What is Advanced Motivational Interactions training?

Advanced Motivational Interactions in group work training develops further the skills to maximise rehabilitative and motivational potential of every day staff - offender contact and provides a chance to consolidate practice through case study of successes and difficulties encountered, avoiding ‘skills drift’ away from effective practice.

Who is the training suitable for?

Advanced Motivational Interactions training is a Level 2 course requiring staff to have attended the Level 1 Foundations course. It is particularly suitable for staff whose role may include more extended personal interactions with offenders, such as personal officers and group workers.
The training concentrates on confirming and developing existing skills and includes

Skills Consolidation

  • Ensuring effective use of opportunistic ‘microbursts’
  • Presentation and analysis of case studies
  • Further practice of core skills of reflective listening
  • Focus on specific areas of difficulty identified
  • Consolidation of Core skills of reflective listening
  • Consideration of peer support to avoid skills drift

Skills Development

  • Advanced reflections
  • Advanced summaries
  • Clarification of key strategies
  • Advanced negotiation of goals and target setting
  • Lapse prevention
  • Relapse recovery

Advanced Motivational Interactions will require staff to examine their own practice in order to increase the reflexivity necessary for effective practice. The focus is on exploring and clarifying their experience of using the Foundation level techniques and so a period of several months is required between the Foundation Level 1 and the Advanced level 2 courses.
